A sweet short film about living in the moment...
Elan stars Sergio Villalpando (Roman) and Brooklyn based actress, Heloise Wilson who portrays Cate. In an almost non linear structure, Elan is a short lived love story, depicting the notion of living in the moment. Our protagonist, Roman, sees Cate in a night club and shortly follows her out. They embark on a short but intense love affair. As expected by the title, this love story is momentary.
Our emotionally eloquent protagonist, is a philosophical character and his love interest, Cate, is an ode to the manic pixie girl. The fantastical girl who makes a mark on the guy's life. Contrary to him, Cate believes that the concept of Elan is a momentum, but Roman believes that it is the moment in which you take to do something.
Elan mingles complexity and simplicity in a resonating way; a simple aching love story with an interesting message. It reminded me a little of 500 Days of Summer, in tone and theme. The images are beautiful and intimate and support this very intimate and intense love story between the two.
Both actors do well holding the floor and carrying the film, being the only two characters in it. Villalpando portrays the intense and complex character of Roman rather well, however, the real gem of the story is Wilson. She is effortlessly natural and charming. It is no wonder why Roman falls for her character and is unable to forget her.
Elan is a bittersweet pleasant short, it is poetic and touching.
